What separates mavericks like Richard Branson, Ian Schrager or Jay Abraham from the rest of the pack? Do they have superpowers that we mere mortals can only dream of? Extra appendages? A genetic mutation? More than 24 hrs in their day? Born under the right sign? What is it?
I say two things...that really boil down to one. First, they are masters of extrapolation. And the good news? With diligent practice and a little inspiration, you can master it too!
So what is Extrapolation, you ask? Sounds like it could be fun...
The dictionary defines : to estimate to values outside the known range.
OK so what is that? To create outside of this reality.... To not rely on past successes or failures to determine your future.... Being willing to let go of everything and start over.... To be controversial.... To look at things that no one has ever done and not ask how? but why not?... To always be in the question. What if the moment we think we have the answer, have it all figured out...what if that is the moment we stop creating and things begin to decay?
Do you ever have a day that seems just magic? You need to make a certain contact and you happen to go for coffee and sit right beside the person who can get your foot in the door. There is horrible traffic and bad weather and right when you need it everything just clears up. Maybe you have required money and out of the blue someone calls who owes you money that you completely forgot about. I seem to live my life there when I get out of my own way!
For weeks I had been trying to figure out how to get in with a particular company whose amazing reputation would help my new project immensly just to be associated with them. I had researched, made a few phone calls, but nothing. I was on a flight from Savannah, Ga to NYC and bummed because I didn't get my own row. I began to chat with the woman beside me, just small talk, as you do ...Where are you from? What do you do?....etc....Well, I was also on the look out for a graphic design person. Guess what she did? Right, graphic design...but that is not the even the exciting part. She was freelancing for this exact company...down here...in the middle of nowhere.......What? How is that possible? I thought. Turns out the owners have a beach home here and love it so much they opened a small corp headquarters on this little island where I thought I was hibernating. What are the odds?? How did I get so lucky?
Do things ever just happen to us? Or are we in a constant state of creation whether we acknowlege it or not? What is this place called "the Zone" and how do we get there? Exactly how does one create out of thin air? What awareness do we have to have in order to know which seat to sit in, when not to be in the office? the right investment to make? when it is time to cut and run? what energies are needed for a project to come to fruition with ease? even who not to partner with, in business or in bed for that matter? How much awareness have we shut down not to know these things? How many choices have we made that we knew somewhere when we made them that they were wrong? or were only right for that moment and not forever? .....What if we all still didn't talk to strangers? ate everything on our plate whether we liked it or not? and thought 'down there' was a dirty place?
Hopefully you are over those choices and decisions! But that is how we live our lives in some aspects. Still abiding by rules or decisions or judgements that are just about as silly and useless, if not even detrimental! What if we only lived by our own rules of what feels right to us? What if that is the difference between us and massive success? Would Richard Branson follow how everybody else does business? If he did where would he be today? Would Ian Schrager worry about protocol in the hotel industry? Or have they amassed fortunes creating things that the world has never seen?
Where do you get your brilliance? I know it is in there. It is palpable. I can feel it just waiting for you to invite it to burst into being. How long has it been since you dared to let yourself go there? What inspires you? Where do you go?
Maybe it is during a long hot shower....maybe while driving 95+mph down the freeway.... or perhaps curled up with a mocha on a lazy Sunday morning…….. Where is your sweet spot? What gets your creatives juices flowing?
What if you lived in that space?
